The “Superheroes”-themed Costume Institute gala came and went at the New York Metropolitan Museum last night as fast as Spiderman swings between buildings.

Those glitterati who made the invite list carefully made their way up the museum stairs, some of whom took the theme seriously (Anna Wintour, Christina Ricci, Amber Valletta, Claire Danes) and most of whom just simply went for fabulous (Camilla Belle, Ivanka Trump, Diane Kruger, Coco Rocha, Michelle Monaghan, Gisele Bundchen).

Anna Wintour — Queen Bee (or Alien Queen) of the star-studded evening — wore a Chanel couture gown and bolero, especially made for her by Karl Lagerfeld. Word has it that her space age frock was based on Storm from X-Men. Amber Valletta looked like a golden angel in her pseudo-winged Atelier Versace, while Christina Ricci channeled a luxurious version of Wonderwoman in her red Givenchy bustier under sheer, frothy layers of pale chiffon.

Other guests with sartorial superpowers included Michelle Trachtenberg in vintage, Diane Kruger in a little grey Chanel, Kate Mara in yellow Zac Posen, Barney’s Julie Gilhart in Christopher Kane, Thandie Newton in Chanel, Camilla Belle in Armani Prive, Claudia Schiffer in Valentino Haute Couture, Cecilia Dean in Rodarte, Victoria Beckham in lacy Giorgio Armani, Eva Longoria Parker in Marchesa, Molly Sims and Gisele Bundchen in very revealing Versace, the Olsen twins in Diane von Furstenberg, Kate Moss in Stella McCartney, Kate Bosworth in Chanel Haute Couture, Lauren Santo Domingo in Nina Ricci, Blake Lively in Ralph Lauren (with Penn Badgley also in Ralph Lauren!), Lisa Airan in Rodarte, newly engaged Scarlett Johansson in Dolce & Gabbana, Jennifer Lopez in Alberta Ferretti, Katie Holmes in Giorgio Armani, Ivanka Trump in J. Mendel (and a gorgeous jewel headpiece), Jennifer Connelly in Balenciaga and Christy Turlington Burns in Escada.

The Best Costume award, however, goes to UK bad boy designer Gareth Pugh, who came dressed as Karl Lagerfeld. He stated, “I came as my superhero.”

Kazaam!
